The best way to learn about anyone, and especially a visual artist, is to see them in action, animated and absorbed in their labor of love. Finally, using scuffing and impasto, she adds highlights, creating an illusion of 3-dimensional form. Subsequently, dozens of glazes are applied one by one, slowly adding colors, blending and adding details, with each layer allowed to dry. Next, she glazes the entiere painting with a thin coat of single color, relating to the mood of the painting. Tatyana uses traditional Old Master’s techniques to build up the layers, starting from an initial colored ground, proceeding to monochromatic drawing, than blocking in major shapes to create a grisaille underpainting. A prolific painter, Tatyana has many paintings in progress, waiting for the inspiration to move forward. She works methodically, but passionately, not settling until it feels perfect, some paintings taking years to complete. Tatyana’s creative process is fluid and intuitive, up until the last moment, everything could change. Focusing on portraits, her subjects are actors, scientists, politicians, rock stars, as well as people of all walks of life. A nature lover and a shaman, Tatyana often incorporates organic elements in her paintings from coffee and tobacco to diamonds and gold. Drawing inspiration from the human form, sci-fi, pop-culture, glamour, fashion, 70s dance music, Zen philosophy and everyday life. Consequently, she has developed her own painting method to achieve luminosity and depth of color. Tatyana was fortunate to learn the secrets of Old Masters as a copyist at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. Inspired by Cosmology, Galactic History and Philosophy, she’s exploring the concept of Eternal Soul having a Human Experience. Her background in engineering, design and philosophy blends into colorful artistic voice, intricately reflecting different points of view. This work can be done in graphite, charcoal, watercolor, or oil.Russian-born and California-based, Tatyana Zen is a classically trained artist. While my main focus in my work revolves around figures, I also take commissions for portraits, pet portraits, landscapes, and most other realistic imagery that falls within my style. I also regularly teach at InterUrban ArtHouse and occasionally at the Kansas City Art Institute in the Illustration Department.
Here I teach private lessons, classes, and workshops. In 2009 I opened my first independent studio in Downtown KCK, moved it to the West Bottoms a year later, and finally in 2019 moved to my current location in Overland Park, KS as Lacey Lewis School of Realist Art. This is where I developed my skills and voice as an artist while also taking workshops and classes at The Art Student’s League of NY and Studio Incamminati, with artists including Steven Assael, Max Ginsburg, Robert Liberace, and Daniel Sprick. I was born in Syracuse, NY, attended Onondaga Community College, and moved to Kansas City in my early 20s.
